The Shield
The upper part of the shield is composed of dominant Marian symbolism: blue background, the moon, the five stars, and the ivory tower. The parish was canonically erected on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Great Jubilee 2000. The five stars represent the barangays under the patronal tutelage of the Blessed Virgin Mary, namely, Maunong, Saimsim, Camaligan, Puting Lupa, and Milagrosa. The tower of ivory (cf. Song of Songs 7,5) alludes to Mary and the Church, who are simultaneously pertained to as the beloved bride. Although the tower indicates the industrial development of the parish, it accentuates more the maturing of this parish community under the maternal guidance of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The golden stole draping from the left upper corner to the right lower part of the shield decorated with laurel leaves represents the nobility of diakonia or service. The parish aspires to follow the diakonia of Christ as its primary goal. “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all” (Mark 9,35). It is likewise notable that the stole stands in between industrialization (tower) and agriculture (plow). It serves as a constant reminder to the faithful of this parish that despite the rapid changes of time, the Gospel values will remain constant and will be the standard of everything.
The lower part of the shield has symbols pertaining to its patron saint: San Isidro Labrador. The green background embodies agriculture and abundant harvest. The plow symbolizes San Isidro and the dignity of human work. Before the present development, the parish circumscription was agricultural land, and the primary source of livelihood for the people was farming.
The official seal included the tower and the laurel leaves as a sign of everlasting gratitude to the Torres-Laurena Family, who generously supports this parish community and has gifted it with a church worthy of God’s worship.
The Motto
“Ego sum vitis, vos palmites” (John 15,5). I am the vine and you are the branches. The parish motto was taken from the gospel pericope (John 15,1-7), the reading used as the gospel for the feast of San Isidro Labrador (May 15). The motto has three messages to convey: 1) The parish life will be inutile if not connected to Christ, who is the vine. Thus, the parish will strive to always forge a connection with Christ through the proclamation of the Christian Faith, the sacraments, and pastoral endeavors. 2) As vines, the faithful of this parish will work hard to go out to the periphery and to reach out to their Christian brothers and sisters. 3) The parish will strive always to be united with Christ by living in communion with one another.
History of San Isidro Labrador Parish
“Mula noon hanggang ngayon: Sadya ngang itinadhana ka, sadya ngang pinagpala ka, Parokya ni San Isidro Labrador – Makiling.”
Due to the rapid growth of the population in Calamba, the Bishop decided to establish parishes in this town. One of them is the St. Vicent Ferrer Parish in Barangay Real which was established in February 3, 1992. Then, under the leadership of Most. Rev. Francisco C. San Diego, D.D, Bishop Emeritus of Diocese of San Pablo, St. Vincent Ferrer parish was divided into two due to the continuous increase of population over the years. Thus, it was on December 8, 2000, San Isidro Labrador Parish, Barangay Makiling was established as the new parish of the Diocese of San Pablo.
Timeline History
Barangay Makiling faithful community, including the neighboring barangay was still under the Parish of San Vicente Ferrer in Barangay Real, City of Calamba. Only a small and simple chapel stood then in the place where the new, larger and more elegant San Isidro Labrador Parish church is located at present.
A proposal of establishing Barangay Makiling and the neighboring community to be a quasi-parish was formally accepted. Among them are Barangay Milagrosa, Maunong, Saimsim, Camaligan and Puting Lupa. Through the Parish Priest of San Vicente Ferrer at that time Rev. Fr. Isagani Pasawa, Most Rev. Francisco C. San Diego, D.D., Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of San Pablo, requested to build its own convent for such a purpose. Thus, a construction of a small convent began through the combined financial assistance, services and support of the community.
At the height of the construction, the community faced a huge financial problem, but in God’s mercy and grace, that did not become an obstacle for the good aspirations of the emerging parish.
In the month of August, the pilgrim relic of St. Therese of the Child Jesus arrived in the Philippines and the chapel of Barangay Makiling was blessed to be considered to welcome the relic. In front of the large number of people and devotees who attended such an important event, the blessing of the constructed convent was conducted. At that time, many were saddened by the illness of Mr. Feliciano L. Torres, the very kind and very supportive President of Yazaki-Torres Manufacturing Incorporated, who needs treatment in the United States. In God’s divine blessing and prayers, Mr. Torres immediate recovery led to a commitment together with his entire family to help finish the convent that was being built and will start building a church the moment he returned to the Philippines.
January, Great Jubilee Year, the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the church and convent buildings was formally held. Most Rev. Francisco C. San Diego, D.D., Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of San Pablo, led the ceremony together with Rev. Fr. Isagani Pasawa with the presence of Mr. Feliciano L. Torres, Bro. Andy Garcia’s family, fellow church servants, and some government leaders. Eighth of December year 2000, Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Most Rev. Francisco C. San Diego, D.D. presided the Holy Mass for the Consecration of the Parish of San Isidro Labrador – Makiling. Also, it was then declared to the community the appointment of Rev. Fr. Philip B. Atienza as its first Parish Priest.
Over the years, San Isidro Labrador parish has marked its notable development and improvements. The parish has conquered changes, trials and challenges, and still continues to strive to reach all its mission through the profound cooperation, commitment and support of the whole parish community. Truly, SILP parish’s journey has engraved the heart of every member of the community aiming to continuously proclaim and deepen the faith to God who is the source of unconditional love and care for the sake of the goodness of his people.
